How Often Should a DPF Be Cleaned? OEM Intervals for Class 6-8 Trucks

Your exhaust system doesn’t ask for much. It sits back there and does its job until the day it doesn’t, and then it takes your truck off the road with a load already on the trailer. The diesel particulate filter is almost always the part that does it.

Every DPF fills with ash. Not soot, ash. Soot burns off during regen. Ash doesn’t, and no amount of highway driving will clear it out. It builds load after load until backpressure climbs and the engine starts fighting itself. For fleets running stop-and-go routes through Orlando, Tampa, and Central Florida, that happens faster than the mileage on the door suggests.

Here’s what we check during a DPF service at our Orlando shop and how to know when yours is due.

OEM DPF Cleaning Intervals for Class 6-8

Every manufacturer publishes a number. Here’s where the major engines land:

Engine Highway Local Driving
Cummins ISB, ISC, ISL, ISM, ISX 200,000 mi / 6,500 hrs 75,000 mi / 2,420 hrs
Detroit DD13, DD15, DD16 300,000 mi / 9,000 hrs 60,000 mi / 2,000 hrs
Caterpillar C7, C9, C13, C15 150,000 mi / 4,500 hrs 80,000 mi / 2,400 hrs
Mack MP7, MP8, MP10 250,000 mi / 4,500 hrs Consult duty cycle
PACCAR PX-6, PX-8 200,000 mi / 6,500 hrs Consult duty cycle
International MaxxForce 150,000 mi 80,000 mi / 2,400 hrs

Most Class 6-8 trucks need a DPF cleaning around every 200,000 miles. But the odometer only tells half the story. Detroit bases its interval on fuel burned, not just distance, and newer EPA10 and GHG14 engines can stretch further under clean duty cycles.

Duty cycle beats mileage every time. Detroit drops from 300,000 miles to 60,000 in vocational service. That’s a five-fold swing on the same engine. If your trucks idle a lot, run short haul, or work off-road, plan on cleaning well before the book number.

Signs Your DPF Needs Service

These are the symptoms we see most often on trucks coming into the shop:

Regens happening more often

If active regens are showing up more frequently than they used to, ash is taking up space soot needs. This is the earliest reliable warning you’ll get.

Regen cycles that won’t complete

A regen that runs long or aborts before finishing means the filter can’t flow enough to reach temperature. Ignore it and you’ll be in derate soon.

Power loss under load

Restricted exhaust flow shows up on grades and pulling out loaded. Drivers usually notice this before the dash does.

Fuel economy sliding

Same routes, same loads, worse MPG. The engine is burning extra fuel pushing exhaust through a plugged filter and running more regens on top of it.

DPF lamp or derate warning

By the time the light comes on, ash has been building for a long time. This is the last stop before a tow.

A clogged DPF doesn’t fail alone. High backpressure stresses the turbo, EGR components, and the DOC. Cleaning the filter on schedule protects everything upstream of it.

What’s Included in a DPF Cleaning Service

Here’s what we do for a full DPF service:

  • Removal and inspection — we pull the filter and look at it for cracks, melted substrate, and face plugging before you pay to clean a filter that needs replacing
  • Pre-clean flow test — we measure restriction going in so there’s a baseline
  • Cleaning to the approved method — pneumatic and thermal cleaning matched to the filter; the wrong method on the wrong substrate causes damage
  • Post-clean flow test — we verify the filter actually flows again and you get the numbers
  • Reinstall to spec — new gaskets, correct torque, and a full seal check
  • Reset and forced regen — ash accumulator reset and a forced regen before the truck leaves the yard

You get documentation showing before and after. That matters for warranty, for resale, and for your own maintenance records.

Some engine families have manufacturer positions that call for filter exchange rather than local cleaning. We’ll tell you straight which category your unit falls into and what each option costs. No surprises.

DPF Cleaning in Orlando & Central Florida

Inland Truck Repair provides diesel particulate filter cleaning and exhaust system diagnostics in Orlando, serving fleets and owner-operators across Central Florida from Kissimmee and Sanford to Daytona Beach, Lakeland, and Tampa. We work on all major diesel platforms: Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, International, Volvo, Mack, Isuzu and others.

A scheduled cleaning is a maintenance expense you plan around. A replacement filter is four figures per unit, and one-box systems carry more than one. Add a tow, a night in a motel, and a missed delivery, and the math stops being close.

Don’t wait for the derate. Get on the schedule before the filter decides for you.
