Truck AC Not Cooling? Signs Your Commercial Truck AC Needs Service Before Florida Summer

When it’s 95 degrees and humid outside, a working AC isn’t a luxury, it’s a safety issue. Driver fatigue, heat exhaustion, and distraction all increase when the cab is hot. And a system that’s just barely keeping up in May will fail completely by August. For fleet managers and owner-operators running routes through Orlando, Tampa, and Central Florida, a broken truck AC in July means a driver safety risk and potential DOT concern.

Here’s what we check when a commercial truck comes in for an AC service at our Orlando shop and what you should be watching for before the heat peaks.

Signs Your Truck AC Needs Repair

These are the most common symptoms we see in diesel trucks and semi trailers across Central Florida fleets:

Weak airflow or warm air

If the system is blowing but not cooling, refrigerant is likely low. Slow leaks are common in older systems and get worse with heat cycles over the summer.

No cold at idle

AC that cools fine at highway speed but goes warm at idle usually points to a condenser fan issue or low refrigerant. Common in stop-and-go delivery routes.

Unusual noises when the compressor kicks on

Rattling or squealing when the AC engages can mean a failing compressor clutch. Catch it early and it's a clutch replacement. Ignore it and you're looking at a full compressor.

Musty smell from the vents

Florida humidity is brutal on evaporator cores. Mold and mildew build up fast. A cabin air filter swap and evaporator treatment clears it up before it becomes a cab air quality problem.

Don’t wait for a total failure. Refrigerant doesn’t just disappear it means there’s a leak. Running a low system burns out the compressor faster. Fix the leak first, then recharge.

What’s Included in a Commercial Truck AC Inspection

A full truck AC inspection at our Orlando shop takes about an hour. Here’s what we check:

  • Refrigerant pressure test — we check for leaks and verify charge levels against manufacturer spec
  • Compressor function — clutch engagement, output, and belt condition
  • Condenser and evaporator — inspected for damage, blockage, and corrosion from Florida’s salt air and humidity
  • Cabin air filter — swapped if clogged or moldy
  • Electrical controls — blower motor, relays, and thermostat function
  • Recharge to spec — if the system checks out, we top off refrigerant and confirm output temps

Most trucks leave the same day. We work on all major diesel platforms: Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, International, Volvo, Mack, Isuzu and others.
